How to screen a learner's literacy skills
12 FROGZ TRAINING12 Frogz LiteracyAssessment
Screen, identify, assess and support struggling readers in 12 reading subskills.
A two-day training course that hands you a complete literacy assessment toolkit: twelve practical tools, one for each reading subskill a struggling reader relies on, so you know exactly what a child is missing and where to begin.
You work through the tools on real readers in the room, then take home both printed, full-colour guides and the confidence to assess, record and plan support for your next learner.

SCREENING MADE SIMPLEYou can seethe struggle
You know within a week that a child is not reading like the rest of the class. What follows is harder: the school wants evidence, and you still need to know where to begin.
12 Frogz turns that instinct into a formal assessment and report that will bring clarity and structure to referring a child for intervention.
WHO IT IS FORDesigned withPurpose
- Classroom teachers whose readers are falling behind and who need to know exactly why, not just that they are.
- Remedial and learning support educators who must plan intervention and evidence it to the school.
- Therapists and tutors assessing learners one-on-one and looking for a structure behind their instincts.

WHY IT WORKSSIASAligned
First, the tools: twelve practical literacy assessment tools, one for each skill area a struggling reader relies on, so you stop guessing which one is missing.
Then the plan: every tool comes in three parts — a one-page Watch-Checklist, the formal tool with its script and scoring, and a Getting-Ready sheet listing exactly what goes on the table before you start. “Made Easy” quick-reference sheets sit beside each one.
Reading Intervention Made Possible
- 01ScreenA one-page Watch-Checklist screens a whole class from ordinary teaching over two to three weeks.
- 02IdentifyScreening flags the areas that matter, so you only assess what actually needs assessing.
- 03AssessScripted tools with recording sheets and scoring criteria, banded for ages 8–9, 10–12 and 13–15.
- 04SupportIndividual Support Plans built straight from the assessment results, not from guesswork.
THE 12 FROGZMeet OurTwelve Heroes
Every frog stands for one skill area, each with enough depth to drive real teaching decisions. Together they show you where a reader's struggle begins.
WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENTBroad andDeep
Both Broad and Deep
Most assessments are narrow and deep, or broad and shallow. 12 Frogz is both: twelve distinct skill areas with real depth in each.
Results You can Act On
Results describe what a learner can do, where the process breaks down and what must be adjusted, not a single overall score.
Grounded in Research
Every result category is reasoned against published research, grounded in the Science of Reading and aligned with SIAS and CAPS.

BEFORE YOU BOOKQuestions Answered
Do I need teaching experience?
No. The toolkit was built for classroom and remedial teachers, therapists and learning support staff. The two days walk you through each tool step by step, so you leave able to run the assessments yourself.
What do I take home?
The complete 12 Frogz toolkit: 12 practical literacy assessment tools covering the reading subskills a struggling reader is missing, plus two printed, full-colour guides (Part 1 and Part 2) that you keep and use with every learner.
How does the two-day course run?
It is two full days of six hours each, taught live by Annemarie Roux at the Yellow Tree Learning Centre. Lunch and coffee are included, and every delegate leaves with a Certificate of Attendance.
How many people are in the room?
Twelve seats only. A smaller group means an intimate training atmosphere is achieved.
Can my school pay by invoice?
Yes. Generate an official invoice from the training page with your school's details and each attendee, then pay by EFT using the invoice number as your reference. Seats are confirmed once payment is received. Need a formal quote or purchase order first? Email tania@yellowtreereading.com.
Which ages do the tools cover?
The formal assessment tools are banded for three age groups: 8–9, 10–12 and 13–15. Each comes with a script, a recording sheet and scoring criteria, so results are comparable from one learner to the next.
Is this a diagnosis?
No. 12 Frogz is a screening and assessment toolkit for educators. It shows what a learner can do, where the process breaks down and what to adjust, and it helps you decide when a referral to a specialist is genuinely needed.
Is there an online version of the course?
Yes — an online version of 12 Frogz is launching soon, so you will be able to study the same programme at your own pace from anywhere. For now the toolkit is taught live at the two-day in-person workshops; email us if you would like to be told the moment the online course opens.
